I consulted the map but didn’t anticipate how challenging the paddling would be. Definitely check out the refuge’s online map before deciding on a route. To get started, you have to create a profile at and figure out your itinerary, along with paying for your required wilderness permits. You’ll have to pack in your necessities - food, water, tent and clothing - and have an inner commitment to knowing you will survive any challenge that comes your way in the largest national wildlife refuge east of the Mississippi River. Not-so-sweet idea: Risking the Okefenokee Swamp for an element used in candy markingsįor about $50 a day, you can paddle a canoe in a watery, alligator-laden wilderness. If downtown’s to-go cups and party scene have you longing for some solitude, slower pace, and different challenges, the Okefenokee Swamp may be exactly what you need.
